Steps have been taken to free education institutes from tobacco and drugs.
As part of this, the ministry of education has ordered the banning of all adverts of tobacco products around academic institutes.
Talking about the matter, Md Mahbub Hossain, the secretary for secondary and higher secondary department, said, “The order has been given to ensure a proper academic atmosphere for students.”
Last year, Education Minister Dr Dipu Moni took some steps to ensure proper academic atmosphere for students at academic institutes. In that line, the publicity of all tobacco related items was banned from areas featuring schools and colleges.
The amended tobacco usage and control law states that a smoker has to pay a fine of Tk. 300 for lighting up in a public place which includes legal institutes, legal offices, library, lift, hospital, autonomous office, cinema hall, clinic, theatre hall, bus terminal, airport, river port etc. However, despite the presence of such a law, the usage of tobacco hasn’t stopped and tobacco selling kiosks have developed near education institutes.
