In 2019, more than 1,000 children became victims of rape; in that account, on average, 84 children were raped every month.
On Wednesday (Jan 8), a report from the Bangladesh Shishu Forum says that sexual abuse of children has risen.
The report states that in 2019, 4,381 children faced a variety of abuse. Of this, 2088 children had unnatural deaths and 1,383 were victims of sexual torture. Sexual abuse has risen by 70.34 percent.
Abuse of children has been divided into six categories: unnatural death, sexual abuse, abduction, death due to beatings and child marriage. From 2015 till 2019, a total of 3,136 children were victims of rape with 52 rapes on average every month.
In the last five years, only 164 cases related to child abuse had their verdicts. The highest number of rapes was in Narayanganj, Noakhali, Mymensingh and Gazipur.
Dhaka takes the dubious top spot with 116 child rape incidents.
In 2019, the killing of children has risen by 7.18 percent. In most cases, children lost lives due to family feuds and extramarital affairs. In 2019, 448 children were killed – the highest in the last five years. In 2018, the number of child killings was 418.
