After a spell of rain, the mercury has dipped by an average of 3 degrees Celsius across the country on Sunday (Jan 5) and the Met office predicts it to further drop by 1 to 3 degrees.
"As the sky clears the temperature is coming down and it might drop 1 to 2 degrees today [Sunday], which will further dip tomorrow [Monday, Jan 6]," Meteorologist Arif Hossain told Bangla Tribune.
According to him, Panchagarh's Tetulia is experiencing a cold wave on Sunday, which will spread to other areas the next day. "A cold wave is expected to sweep over Bangladesh later this week," he added.
In its forecast for the 24 hours from Sunday 9am, the Met office said light rain or drizzles are likely to occur at one or two places over Rangpur, Rajshahi, Dhaka, Mymensingh and Sylhet divisions and the regions of Jashore, Kushtia & Chattogram.
It said weather may remain mainly dry with temporary partly cloudy sky elsewhere over the country and light to moderate fog may occur at places over the country during midnight to morning.
Night temperature may fall by 1 to 3 degrees while day temperature may remain nearly unchanged over the country.At least 50 people have died as cold weather swept across the country late last year.
At least 17 people died of acute respiratory infection and 33 from diarrhoea and other diseases across Bangladesh from Nov 1 to Dec 28, according to the government’s health directorate.
Hospitals have been crowded with people suffering from cold-related illnesses, such as influenza, dehydration and pneumonia.
