Firefighters douzed the fire after a two-hour-long effort in Gazipur on Sunday (Dec 15).Luxury Fan Factory, which caught fire on Sunday and killed ten workers, had been operated without the approval from government, says an official.
"Luxury Fan Factory owned by Ruza Hi-tech was operating in Kashorita village under Baria union of Gazipur Sadar upazila without any approvalm" said Farid Ahmed, joint inspector general of Inspection for Factories and Establishments (DIFE).
“If anyone wants to establish a factory, they first need to take approval from DIFE, or else no other authorities will issue them trade licence or any other approval,” he added.
A signboard of Ruza Hi-tech Company, hanging in front of the factory's gate, showed a QR Code of approval. However, when scanned it was found to be invalid.
Ruza Hi-tech Company has been operating two other unauthorized factories in the same village.
Farid Ahmed said, “We will close down the two other factories, as those are illegal too."
"We will soon file a case against the owner of the company at the labour Court."
He also said: "In accordance to Labour Law, each family of the deceased workers is eligible to get a compensation of maximum Tk 250,000 from the factory owners."
"Moreover, they can also claim a compensation of maximum Tk 200,000 for each deceased from Labour Welfare Board of Labour Ministry."
The fire broke out on the top floor of the three-storied building. A total of 70 to 80 workers were present in the factory when the incident occurred and 19 of them were on the top floor.
