Police, airport security alert about possible drone attacks

Shahjalal International AirportWith fears of attack by drones, law enforcers have ramped up security around Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport. Recently, a state-run intelligence agency warned the civil aviation authority.

In September, that intelligence agency wrote to civil aviation authority stating that radicals may carry out an attack with drones.

The agency's letter added that rooftops of high rise apartment buildings of sector 11, 12 13 of Bashundhara may be used to carry out attacks.

On Mar 17, 2017, a suicide attack was carried out at the RAB headquarter; in the incident, the attacker was killed and two members wounded.

A few days later on Mar 24, an explosion occurred near the police check post of the Shahjalal International Airport. In that incident, the attacker was killed. Later, the IS claimed responsibility for the attack.

Member of the civil aviation authority (security) Shahiduzzaman Farouqi, said: “Civil aviation personnel and law enforcers will ensure security.”

The police have already cautioned homeowners and welfare associations of Uttara sectors 11, 12 and 13. The homeowners have been asked not to allow any outsider on the roof.

In December 2014, police arrested two radicals from Jatrabari area with equipment to make drones. The arrested men told the police of their plans to carry our drone-based attacks.

On Sept 5, 2017, RAB arrested two persons with drones and locally made weapons.

On Aug 13 this year, Dhaka Metropolitan Police, DMP, banned the flying of drones. There isn’t any accurate information with civil aviation authority about the actual number of drones in the country.

Deputy police commissioner Nabid Kamal, said: 'the flying of drones has been banned a few months ago; a campaign is underway to raise awareness among house owners.”
