Cumilla Awami League leader Parvez Hossain Sarker, who was found some 10 hours after his ‘abduction’ in Dhaka, claims that he was made to sign on blank stamped papers.
“The abductors took my signatures in Bangla and English on two sets of blank stamped papers. I have no idea why they had done it,” he told the media at his residence in the capital on Saturday.
On Friday afternoon, Parvez was dragged into a car by unidentified people near his Lalmatia residence when he was on his way back home from the mosque after the Jumma prayers.
Hours after, he called his wife and asked her to pick him up from the 300 Feet Road in Purbachal, where he claimed his abductors dropped him.
Speaking to the media on Saturday, Parvez said, “As I was heading to the entrance of the apartment building, where I live, a man approached to me while a second man from the behind shoved me in to a car.”
Parvez claimed that he was held at gunpoint inside the vehicle before a handkerchief was pressed against his face, when he fell unconscious.
“I was in the vehicle, when I woke up. The men then took my signatures on blank stamped papers. But I don’t know why they did it. After I signed the blank documents they dropped me near the Kanchan Bridge. I then called my home to pick me up,” he said before added that the abductors did not assault him.
Parvez, a former chairman of Cumilla’s Titash Upazila, said he had no idea who may have been behind the incident.
“I have no business rivals, but I do have political ones. For the last one year, I do not go to my native area as I was attacked once. But I would refrain from pointing fingers. The police is investigating the matter, let’s see what comes out.”
Police said that an investigation has been opened.
“The licence plate of the vehicle used for the abduction does not exist. The BRTA has confirmed that they have not issued a licence plate on that number. We are going through security camera footages. We will speak with Parvez once he recovers from the trauma,” said Mohammadpur police OC Jamal Uddin Mir.
CCTV camera footages of the incident posted on the social media show a man exchanging pleasantries and shaking hands with Parvez when he was about to enter the building while a second man approached before the two dragged him in to a car.
