The High Court has said that failure to solve the Sagar-Runi murder case will dent RAB’s image. The court gave the observation, Thursday (Nov 14), through a joint bench of justices M Enayetur Rahim and Md Mostafizur Rahman while giving a verdict on the case dissolution appeal by one of the suspects, Tanvir Rahman.
At the court, the accused was represented by lawyer Fauzia Karim Feroj while the state, by deputy attorney general Md. Sarwar Hossain.
The court observed: “it’s frustrating that the case was not solved even after such a long time had elapsed; RAB has set examples of success in recovering illegal weapons, preventing the trade of spurious products and drugs. But the achievements will become eroded if the Sagar-Runi case remains unsolved.”
In the verdict, the court relieved suspect Tanvir Rahman from appearing at the lower court until the case report is submitted.
News editor of Machranga TV Sagar Sarwar and his wife, senior reported for ATN Bangla, Meherun Runi, were killed at their rented apartment in West Rajabazar on Feb 11, 2012.
Initially, the case officer was Sher e Bangla police station which later went to the Detective Branch. After two months, the DB failed to crack the case and, at the order of the high court, the case was handed over to RAB.
But there has not been any marked progress in the case in the last seven years. Sagar’s friend Tanvir and seven others are accused in the killing and while they were taken to remand, no one gave a confessional statement. Though the case report was supposed to be filed today, the date has been delayed for the 69th time.
