Abrar murder: Police press charges against 25

The police have charged 25 people over the murder of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) student Abrar Fahad.
A team of the Detective Branch (DB) of police led by investigating officer Inspector Md Wahiduzzaman submitted the charge sheet to the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court on Wednesday (Nov 13).
Wahiduzzaman said that there are 60 witnesses in the case and 21 evidence have been filed with the court.
Earlier in the day, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Additional Commissioner Monirul Islam while briefing the media said that 25 people have been named in the charge sheet.
“During the probe, it was revealed that 11 people directly took part in the killing while the rest of the 14 were involved some way or the other,” he said.
He added that during the probe they found the involvement of six people other than the 19 initially accused when the case was opened.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Additional Commissioner Monirul Islam while briefing the media said that 25 people have been named in the charge sheet.The police are set to press charges against Mehedi Hasan Rasel, Anik Sarker, Ifti Mosharraf Shokal, Mehedi Hasan Robin, Meftahul Islam Jion, Muntasir Alam Jemmy, Khandaker, Tabakkharul Islam Tanvir, Mujahidur Rahman, Muhtasim Fuad, Moniruzzaman Monir, Akash Hossain, Hossain Mohammad Toha, Majedul Islam, Shamim Billah, Meyaj Abu Huraira, ASM Nazmus Sadat, Ishtiak Ahmed Munna, Amit Saha, Mizanur Rahman, Shamsul Arefin Rafat, SM Mahmud Setu and Rafi.

AC Islam said that amongst the 25, four people are on the run.

Earlier in the day, before the charge sheet reached the court, Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Md Kairsarul Islam deferred the submission of the probe report to Nov 18 as the investigators failed to submit it.

A team of the Detective Branch (DB) of police led by investigating officer Inspector Md Wahiduzzaman went to the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court with the charge sheet on Wednesday (Nov 13) but it is yet to be submitted.On Oct 7, Abrar, a second-year student of electrical and electronic engineering department of the university, was beaten to death.

A group of BCL BUET unit leaders and activists bludgeoned Abrar to death allegedly for his social media post criticizing the recent Bangladesh-India deal on sharing the water of Five River and for his alleged involvement with Islami Chhatra Shibir, the student wing of Jamaat-e-Islami.

Abrar's father Barkat Ullah filed a murder case against 19 people with the capital's Chawkbazar police the day of the murder.

The killing of Abrar sparked protest across the country with protesters demanding justice for him and capital punishment for the murderers.

The BUET authorities also banned the activities of all political student bodies on the campus amid the student protest.
