The government has banned Islamist outfit 'Allah'r Dol', saying it posed threat to public safety.
In an official notification on Tuesday (Nov 5), the home ministry said that group has been banned as its activities pose a threat to public safety and security.
The move comes a day after, Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan told a discussion on Nov 3, organised by a reporters' body, that the government would ban eight outfits.
"Intelligence agencies have already received inputs on eight outfits and steps will be taken against them," he said then before adding it was already decided to outlaw 'Alla'r Dol'.
Allah’r Dol was formed in 1995 under the leadership of Matin Mehedi alias Mominul Islam and in late 2004, the outfit merged with banned militant organisation Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB), the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) said in August this year after claiming to arrest four of it activists, including acting chief Ibrahim Ahmed Hiro.
As JMB faced a serious blow after the arrest of its top leaders following the 2005 countrywide bomb blasts, Matin left JMB with his followers and tried to reorganise Allah’r Dol, the elite police unit said then.
Matin was arrested in 2007 when he was still the chief of the outfit, according to RAB.
