Rabeya KhatunThe High Court scrapped the trial proceeding of an arms case against octogenarian Rabeya Khatun.
The HC bench of justices led by Jahangir Hossain Selim delivered the verdict on Wednesday (Oct 30) after hearing a rule issued by this court earlier.
Supreme Court lawyer Ashraful Alam Nobel on Apr 25 this year filed a petition with the High Court saying that Rabeya Khatun had been suffering as she needed to appear before the trial court in the connection with the case for the last 18 years.
Following the petition, the High Court on Apr 29 this year issued a rule asking the government to explain why the trial proceeding against Rabeya Khatun should not be quashed.
After holding hearing on the rule, the High Court on Wednesday acquitted Rabeya of the case proceeding.
Tejgaon police Sub Inspector Abdur Razzak lodged a case against Rabeya and two others for illegal possession of firearms on Jun 2, 2002. Rabeya was arrested and released after six months, but later, the trial started on Mar 24, 2003, and a charge formed against them.
