ACC moves to freeze BNP MP Harun’s bail

BNP lawmaker Md Harunur RashidThe Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has filed an appeal with the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court seeking a stay on a High Court order which granted a six-month interim bail to BNP lawmaker Harunur Rashid.
The bail was granted in a case filed against the BNP lawmaker for abusing duty-free import privilege.
Chamber Judge of the Appellate Division Justice Md Nuruzzaman sent the appeal to the regular bench fixing Wednesday for hearing, said ACC’s lawyer Khurshid Alam Khan on Tuesday (Oct 29).
Khandaker Mahbub Hossain, Joynul Abedin and Harun’s wife Advocate Asifa Ashrafi stood for the BNP MP.
On Monday, the HC granted the interim bail to MP Harun, and also stayed the lower court verdict that fined him with Tk 5 million.
On Oct 21, a court sentenced Harun, MP from Chapainawabganj 3 constituency, to five-year imprisonment and fined him Tk 5 million in the case.
The court also sentenced former NTV managing director Enayetur Rahman Bappi and Sky Autos owner IshtiakSadek to two years and three years in prison, respectively.
According to the prosecution, Harun imported a duty-free vehicle for over one-and-half million taka in 2004. Later, he in collusion with Imtiaz sold out the vehicle to Enayetur Rahim at Tk 9.7 million.
Enayetur and Ishtiak were also fined Tk 100,000 and Tk4 million, respectively.
Later, sub-inspector Mohammad Yunus Ali of Tejgaon Police Station filed a case against MP Harun and two others on March 17, 2007.
In July, 2007, ACC Assistant Director Monayem Hossain after investigation submitted a charge-sheet before the court against the trio.
