A court in Dhaka has remanded SM Mahmud Setu for four days over the murder of BUET student Abrar Fahad.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Jashim granted police the custody of the suspect on Monday (Oct 28) after investigators sought seven days.
Setu was arrested on Sunday (Oct 27) from the capital’s Banglamotor area by the Dhaka metro police’s Detective Branch (DB).
So far, 21 people have been detained in connection with the case.
“Although his name was not cited in the first information report, Setu was detained based on confessional statements of the other arrestees and relevant evidences in connection with Abrar murder,” said Deputy Commissioner Md Masudur Rahman of the Dhaka metro police.During initial interrogation, Setu said he was a student of the BUET’s 14th batch and completed his graduation in April this year.
He used to stay at Room Number 2012 of Sher-e-Bangla Hall and works at a pharmaceutical company in Manikganj as a chemical engineer, according to investigators.
A second-year EEE student, Abrar Fahad was tortured to death allegedly by leaders of the ruling Awami League’s student front Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) in Sher-e-Bangla Hall in the early hours of Oct 7.
The BCL activists bludgeoned Abrar to death reportedly for his Facebook post protesting against a recent deal between Bangladesh and India.
His father started a murder case against 19 people — all BUET students — with the Chawkbazar Police Station in Dhaka the same day.
