The individual behind the hacking Biplob Chandra Shubho’s account has been identified with the help of Facebook authorities.
The account was used to spread religious slur that ignited deadly clashes in the southern island district of Bhola earlier this week.
“The person, who hacked the Facebook account of Bhola’s Biplob Chandra Baidya, has been identified with the help of the Facebook authorities,” Home Ministry’s Public Relations Officer (PRO) Sharif Mahmud told English daily Dhaka Tribune on Thursday (Oct 24).
“Efforts are underway to arrest the hacker and police is working to uncover the mystery behind the incident,” he added.
On Sunday (Oct 20), four people were killed and over 200 injured in Bhola's Borhanuddin Upazila when police opened fire to disperse a mob, who gathered to demand punishment for a Hindu man who they believed was responsible for hate conversations against Islam on the Facebook Messenger app.
Borhanuddin police station Sub-Inspector Delwar Hossain filed a case against them and seven to eight unnamed others under the Digital Security Act for spreading messages containing derogatory remarks on Islam.
On Oct 21, a Bhola court has sent three persons – Biplob Chandra Shuvo, MdImon, and Rafsan Islam Sarif Shakil – to jail in connection with the incident.
Police and locals said messages containing derogatory remarks about Allah and Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) were sent to several individuals from the Facebook ID of Biplob Chandra Shuvo. Screenshots of the messages went viral on Facebook, triggering condemnation and protests.
On October 19, Biplob went to the Borhanuddin police station to file a general diary claiming that his account had been hacked. Police also detained two suspected hackers.
A case was filed against 5,000 unknown people over the clash with Borhanuddin police station.
