‘Abrar wasn’t given water to drink’

Nazmus Sadat, a student of BUET’s mechanical engineering department’s 17th batch was placed on a five-day remand by the Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Court on Wednesday (Oct 16).Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) student Abrar Fahad wasn’t given water to drink when he asked for it while being tortured, said suspect Nazmus Sadat.
“The students of batch 15 and 16 including Anik Sarker, Sakal, Mujahid and Monir beat him up the most,” he told the media on Wednesday (Oct 16).
“Monir told me to call Abrar from his room. I went downstairs, called him and came back to my room around 12,” he added.
Sadat, a student of BUET’s mechanical engineering department’s 17th batch was earlier placed on a five-day remand by the Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Court.
Magistrate Morshed Al Mamun Bhuiyan gave the order after Detective Branch (DB) of police Inspector Md Wahiduzzaman, produced him before the court with a 10-day remand plea.
The DB police arrested Sadat from Dinajpur early on Tuesday (Oct 15) while he was allegedly trying to flee to India through the border.
On Oct 7, Abrar, a second-year student of electrical and electronic engineering department of the university, was found dead on the staircase of BUET’s Sher-e-Bangla Hall.
He was bludgeoned to death allegedly by a group of Bangladesh Chhatra League’s BUET unit leaders and activists for his social media post criticizing the recent Bangladesh-India deal on sharing the water of Five River.
Abrar's father Barkat Ullah filed a murder case against 19 people with the capital's Chawkbazar police on Monday (Oct 7) evening.
The police have so far arrested 20 people over the murder that sparked protest across the country with protesters demanding justice for and capital punishment for the perpetrators.
The BUET authorities also banned the activities of all political student bodies on the campus amid the student protest.
