A court in Dhaka has granted bail to BNP leader M Hafizuddin Ahmed in a case filed under the Digital Security Act.
The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested the BNP vice-chairman along with a former army officer in Dhaka on charges of spreading propaganda against the state.
A retired Army major, Hafiz was arrested on Saturday (Oct 12) from the Dhaka airport following the arrest of former army colonel Muhammad Ishaq from his residence in Mirpur.
Ishaq is the head of security for BNP chief Khaleda Zia, according to media reports.
On Sunday (Oct 13), police produced Hafiz before a Dhaka metropolitan magistrate and sought seven days of custody for questioning while the defence moved a bail petition.
The court turned down the police's plea and set bail for Hafiz at Tk 10,000 bond until the next hearing. He was released from the lock-up of the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court around 5.20pm.
Earlier in the day, a court granted investigators seven days to interrogate Ishaq in custody.
According to the case started by RAB, they had exchanged false, misleading, fictional and intentional speeches about the role of different government agencies via email.
Hafiz and Ishaq have been charged under Sections 27, 31 and 45 of the Digital Security Act.
The sections of the Act are related to offences like endangering national security through cyber-terrorism, destroying communal harmony, and aiding these offences.
