Three more arrests made over Abrar killing

Abrar Fahad. Photo: FACEBOOKThe Detective Branch (DB) of police has made three arrests on Thursday (Oct 10) over the murder of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) student Abrar Fahad beaten to death allegedly by Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) BUET unit leaders.
Police detained Hossain Mahmud Toha, 20, from Gazipur’s Maona area on Wednesday (Oct 10), confirmed Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Deputy Commissioner Masudur Rahman.
“He has been brought to the DB offices. He is the 11th accused in the case filed over Abrar’s murder,” he told Bangla Tribune.
The DB has made 16 arrests including Toha, over the killing that has sparked outrage and protests.
Earlier in the day police detained the Deputy Law Affairs Secretary of BUET Chhatra League Amit Saha for his alleged involvement in the murder.
Amit SahaAmit Saha was detained from a house at the capital’s Sabujbagh area around 11am on Thursday, DMP DB unit’s Joint Commissioner Mahbub Alam confirmed.
“Amit Saha will be produced before the court after primary interrogation,” he said.
They also detained Abrar’s roommate Mizan around 12pm on Thursday from room no 1011 of the university’s Sher e Bangla Hall.
DB sources said, Mizan, a student of Water Resource and Engineering Department, has been arrested for his involvement in the murder.
Mizan was detained around 12pm on Thursday (Oct 10) from room no 1011 of Sher e Bangla Hall.Abrar, a second-year student of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, was found dead in the stairway of the Sher-e-Bangla dormitory in the early hours of Monday (Oct 7).
He was beaten to death reportedly by the university BCL leaders for his Facebook status regarding the instruments signed between India and Bangladesh and for his alleged involvement with Islami Chhatra Shibir, Jamaat-e-Islami’s student wing.
Quoting the students of the dormitory, police said that he was called up from his room at 7:30pm on Sunday (Oct 6).
Later, his body was found on the first-floor stairway of the hall at 2am on Monday and post mortem reports showed that he was beaten of death.
His father filed a murder case against 19 people with Chawkbazar police station on Monday evening and BCL later expelled 11 of its members permanently from the organization.
The incident sparked nationwide protests with protesters demanding justice for Abrar and capital punishment for the killers.
