Three more arrests over BUET student killing

The police have arrested three more people over the killing of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) student Abrar Fahad who was beaten to death allegedly by the university unit Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) leaders on Monday (Oct 7).

BUET Mechanical Engineering student Shamsul Arefin Rafat was arrested from Dhaka’s Jigatola area on Tuesday evening (Oct 8), confirmed Dhaka Metropolitan Police Additional Deputy Commissioner (media and public relations) Md Obaidur Rahman.

Meanwhile, Moniruzzaman Monir, 21, was detained from Demra, while Akash Hossain was nabbed from Gazipu’s Baipal, said Detective Branch of police (Lalbag Zone) Additional Deputy Commissioner Robiul Arafat.

He confirmed that Moniruzzaman and Akash are third-year students of the university’s water resources and engineering departments respectively.

With the three arrests, the number of suspects apprehended over the killing is 13.

Previously, on Monday (Oct 7) police arrested 10 people, all leaders and activists of BCL’s BUET unit committee.

On Tuesday, a Dhaka court granted five-day remands for each of them after they were produced in court.

Abrar, a second-year student of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, was found dead in the stairway in the early hours of Monday.

A resident of Sher-e-Bangla Hall, Abrar was called up from his room at 7:30pm on Sunday, said police, quoting the students of the hall.

Later, his body was found on the first-floor stairway of the hall at 2am on Monday and post mortem reports showed that he was beaten of death.

He was reportedly beaten to beaten to death reportedly by the BCL leaders for his Facebook status regarding the instruments signed between India and Bangladesh.
