Initial investigations indicate that Abrar Fahad, a student of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), was beaten to death, say police.
The 21-year-old was found dead in the stairway of his dormitory in the early hours of Monday (Oct 7).
Abrar, a resident of Sher-e-Bangla Hall, was called up from his room at 7:30 pm on Sunday, said police, quoting the students of the hall. Later, his body was found on the first-floor stairway at 2 am.
He was beaten to death for his suspected links to the Islami Chhatra Shibir— the student wing of Jamaat-e Islami, media reports said citing his classmates.
Police have detained two leaders of the Bangladesh Chhatra League’s (BCL) BUET unit in connection with the incident
“Initial investigations found that he was beaten to death and it’s a clear case of homicide. We have obtained footages from the security camera. Two students of the same hall have been detained and being questioned,” Additional Police Commissioner Krishna Pada Roy of the Dhaka metro police told the media
BUET students Mehedy Hasan Russel and Muhtasim Fuad are now in police custody over the murder.
