Upazila chairman sent to prison for false wealth report

Jhikorgacha Upazila chairman Sabira Sultana.Court has ordered current chairman of Jhikorgacha upazila, Sabira Sultana, to be sent to prison for illegal accumulation and concealment of wealth.

Earlier, the Anti Corruption Commission had lodged a case in this regard.

On 17 July, the chairman surrendered at court and appealed for bail. After hearing, the bail was refused by judge Shahidul Islam.

Bail hearing for Sabira was carried out by advocate Kamal Hossain. On 12 July last, the special court handed three years imprisonment under clauses 26 (2) and 27 (1) under ACC’s act of 2004.

The court also fined Tk. 5000 with three months incarceration without labour if the fine is unpaid.

According to the case file, on 24 May, 2009, Sabira Sultana, showed Tk. 55 lakh 78 thousand in her wealth statement to ACC though later investigation found that the value of her wealth is double to what was declared.

Noting the discrepancy, a case was lodged on 20 July, 2010 by ACC assistant director at the Dhanmondi thana. On 9 November, 2011, the court framed charges against Sabira.
