A female college student, who set herself on fire in broad daylight in Rajshahi, has died at Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH).
She succumbed to her injuries around 7am on Wednesday (Oct 2), said Partho Shankar Pal, resident doctor of Burn and Plastic Surgery Unit at DMCH.
He said the deceased had been battling for her life with 64% burns on her body.
Seventeen-year-old Liza Rahman, daughter of Abdul Latif, of Gaibandha’s Gobindaganj upazila, and also wife of Shakhawat Hossain, 18, is a second year student at City College.
She set herself ablaze in front of the Teacher’s Training College in Rajshahi town ‘over a family dispute’ on Sept 28 afternoon.
Locals rescued Liza and sent her to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RMCH), but she was then transferred to the DMCH for better treatment.
Additional Deputy Police Commissioner Golam Ruhul Kuddus, also the spokesperson of Rajshahi Metropolitan Police, said Liza went to Shah Makhdum police station to file a domestic violence case after a quarrel with her husband in the morning.
Police sent her to lodge the complaint with the Victim Support Centre, situated near the police station, but she left the place and tried to commit suicide by setting herself on fire.
