Cash and jewellery recovered from the ten-day-long drive at the casinos would be kept at the state treasury, said director of RAB’s legal wing, lieutenant colonel Sarwar Bin Shams.
He said: “The drive will continue. The money and jewellery seized were deposited at the thanas, which will eventually send those to the state treasury.”
In the ten-day drive, the RAB have arrested 201 persons and confiscated illegal weapons, foreign liquor, cigarettes, heroin, statues made of touchstone, casino running paraphernalia etc. Several millions of Dollars, FDR, savings bonds and a large amount of jewellery were also confiscated.
On Sept 27, DG of RAB, Benzir Ahmed, said: “This will continue.”
On Sept 18, mobile courts raided four casinos in Motijheel and one in Gulshan. Those arrested from the sports clubs were handed a variety of punishments. During the drives, Tk 4 million was recovered from the clubs.
KHALED MAHMUD ARRESTED
On Sept 18, Jubo League leader Khaled Mahmud Bhuiyan, was arrested from his Gulshan residence.
He was arrested for running casino at Fakirerpul Youngmen’s Club. FROM HIM, illegal weapons, drugs and a large amount of foreign currency were recovered. The RAB also recovered instruments of torture from his Kamlapur office. Four cases were lodged against him at Gulshan and Motijheel thanas.
DRIVE AT WANDERERS’ CLUB
Three persons were arrested, while cash, foreign alcohol and casino equipment were confiscated. One case was lodged under the narcotics law at the Motijheel thana.
Later, RAB personnel arrested local AL leader, Enamul Huq, Rupon Bhuiyan and confiscated more than Tk 50 million are cash and jewellery worth Tk 40 million. Six weapons were also recovered.
ARREST OF G K SHAMIM
On Sept 20, acting on a tip-off, the RAB carried out a drive G K Shamim’s home in Niketan. Cash amounting to Tk 18 million was recovered along with foreign currency and FDR worth Tk 16.53 billion. Seven of his bodyguards were arrested. Three cases for the possession of illegal weapons, drugs and money laundering were lodged against him at Gulshan police.
KALABAGAN CLUB
During a raid at the club, cards, illegal weapons were recovered and club president, Shafiqul Islam Feroj, was arrested. Two cases were filed at Dhanmondi and Gulshan police stations.
DHANMONDI AND FU WANG CLUB
The Dhanmondi Club bar was sealed and on Sept 25, during a raid at Fu Wang, illegal cigarettes plus cash was recovered.
MOHAMMEDAN, VICTORIA AND DILKUSHA CLUBS
From these clubs, walkie-talkies, gambling boards and other equipment were recovered. On Sept 26, director in charge of Mohammedan, Lokman Hossain, was arrested.
RAIDS AT CHATTOGRAM CLUBS
Drive was carried out at Abahanim Muktijoddha, Mohammedan Clubs and a large amount of gambling equipment recovered.
