A general view of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman University of Science and TechnologyAn inquiry opened by the University Grants Commission (UGC) over the allegations against Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Science and Technology University (BSMRSTU) vice-chancellor has recommended he be removed.

“The probe has been completed and the findings have been forwarded to the education ministry,” UGC Chairman Kazi Shahidullah told Bangla Tribune on Sunday (Sept 29).

He, however, declined to provide details before advising to get in touch with the ministry.

A member of the probe panel, asking not to be named, said that the allegations of against BSMRSTU Vice-Chancellor Khondoker Md Nasiruddin were found to be true.

Students of BSMRSTU at Gopalganj have been demonstrating for 11 days demanding the VC's resignation.

On Sunday, they also continued their sit-in program on the university campus. Meanwhile, they sought the prime minister's intervention to solve the crisis.

The students started their protests when the BSMRSTU authorities issued an order to suspend second-year law student Fatema-tuz-Zinia earlier this month, for her supposedly objectionable comments about BSMRSTU in Facebook on Sept 10.

However, the university lifted the suspension order on September 18, after the news went viral on social media, and sparked severe criticism about the university.

On Sept 20, authorities shut down the university until October 3. The university authorities also asked its students to vacate the halls.

The next day, at least 20 students of BSMRSTU in Gopalganj were injured during attacks by the vice-chancellor’s supporters.

Ignited by the incident, the students strengthened their protest against the vice-chancellor and demanded his resignation.
