Lawmaker Menon gets legal notice over casinos

RAB raided at least five clubs in the city and detained and sentenced 182 people in connection with running “casinos”, gambling, and drug abuse, and sealed off at least two clubs.Rashed Khan Menon, the MP from Dhaka -8, has been served with a legal notice seeking explanation of his involvement with an illegal casino in Dhaka.
Menon is a member and the president of Fakirerpool Young Men’s Club in Dhaka that was busted by Rapid Action Battalion on Sept 18.
State Minister for Tourism Mahbub Ali, Whip Shamsul Hoque Chowdhury and Tourism Secretary Mohibul Hoque have also been asked to explain their comments on casinos and gambling.
Similar notices have also been served to the secretaries of the home and tourism ministries seeking necessary explanation.
Supreme Court lawyer Younus Ali Akand who served the notices on Wednesday (Sept 24), said that a petition will be filed if the notices aren’t responded to within 24 hours.
The notice said that that the Section 18 (2) of the Constitution stipulates that the state shall take steps against gambling but since the government hasn’t taken steps casinos and gambling have spread throughout the country.
“According to the media reports, Rashed Khan Menon is the president of Young Men’s Club governing body but the law enforcers aren’t taking any steps against him,” the notice said.
The notice also termed the state minister for tourism and the secretary wanting casinos in tourist zones as “unconstitutional” and the whip’s comments as “ill-disposed.”
