Housing and works ministry did not implement the recommendations made by the ACC against the owners of FR Tower in Banani for construction outside the approved design.
Chief among the recommendations is to demolish the constructed portion built outside the permitted design.
The ministry of housing says that some of the recommendations are being processed and time will be needed for the others to be implemented. On Mar 28, a fire broke out at FR Tower in which 26 lost their lives and 73 were wounded. After the tragedy, ministries of home, housing and ACC formed separate probe bodies. Their submitted reports show that the owner of the tower, engineer SMH Faruk Hossain, built a 23 storied building on an approved design for an 18 storied one.
ACC sent a letter on Jul 28, asking for measures against dishonest officials to the cabinet which then sent a letter to the ministry of housing and works on Aug 7.
Though more than a month has passed, the recommendations have not been implemented as yet.
The recommendations also underlined the need to pay compensation to the families of those who perished in the fire. ACC also recommended demolishing the added floors.
Housing and Public Works Secretary Shahid Ullah Khondokar, said: “we have received the letter from ACC containing the recommendations and have already implemented some of them; some will need the involvement of the ministry of public administration and that is under process.”
As per information from the home ministry, a short circuit caused the fire at FR Tower which then spread to nearby buildings. At present, the building is sealed by city development authority, RAJUK.
