The Rapid Action Battalion has arrested Kalabagan Krira Chakra President Shafiqul Islam Firoz and four others with illegal guns, contraband yaba and gambling equipments following a raid at the club.
Firoz is a member of the ruling party affiliate Sramik League central committee while the four others are office assistants Hafiz, Harun, Liton and Anwar.
Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) started the drive at 7:10pm on Friday (Sept 20) after they had cordoned off the club several hours earlier, confirmed RAB-2 chief Ashique Billah.
“We didn’t find a casino at the club but there are signs that a casino used to be run there,” he said and added that chips and scoreboards were amongst the gambling equipment seized.
The RAB official said that they had intelligence that several illegal activities were run at the club.
He said that the yaba is different from that found in the market in terms of colour and being odourless but both the drugs and guns were found on Firoz’s possession.
Ashique Billah said that charges will be pressed against Firoz under the arms and narcotics acts.
Earlier on Friday, RAB took Firoz into custody for questioning and he was present on spot along with RAB Executive Magistrate Md Gausul Azam during the raid.
RAB started a crackdown on illegal gambling establishments in the city on Sept 18 when it busted several casinos. The ruling party youth front Jubo League leaders have been arrested over the raids.
