Bikalpa Dhara Bangladesh leader Mahi B Chowdhury has brushed aside the money laundering allegations brought against him by Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) what he claimed a “conspiracy”.
“I am a victim of a conspiracy that started before the [Dec 30] national election… I never laundered money abroad and if have any money abroad that has been earned legally. I never amassed wealth illegally,” Mahi said on Sunday (Aug 25).
The Bikalpa Dhara joint secretary general was speaking to the media after emerging out from an ACC's interrogation at the graft watchdog’s head office in Dhaka’s Sengunbagicha.
Claiming the ACC is yet to accuse him, Mahi said he is facing media trial since then graft watchdog summed him 25 days ago.
“The ACC summoned me and I am not embarrassed,” he said.
The media would be briefed on Tuesday (Aug 27), said Mahi adding the ACC wanted to know about his income and expenditure and the tax details for last 10 years.
Earlier on Aug 4, the Munshiganj-1 lawmaker and his wife were summoned by ACC Deputy Director Jalal Uddin Ahmed over allegations of money laundering and accumulating wealth by illegal means and were told to present at the ACC office on Aug 7.
On Aug 7, the couple sought time for facing the interrogation and the ACC then sent them with another notice telling them to present at ACC offices on Aug 25.
According to ACC, the son of former president Dr AQM Badrudozza Chowdhury, Mahi laundered money to the United States and amassed a huge amount of money beyond known sources of income.
The graft watchdog is now trying to trace the sources of the couple’s wealth with assistance from different banks.
