A team of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, north division, has arrested three people with Tk 2.6 million in counterfeit Indian Rupee notes and money making equipment. It’s believed that the fraudsters planned to transact false notes during Eid to import cows and clothes from India.
Detectives say that the fake notes are used in border areas, especially near Chapainawabganj.
Based on a tip off, several people, including two women were arrested from a home in Jatrabari. From them, paraphernalia to make fake notes: colour printer, lamination machine, note printing paper, security seal, glue and foil paper were found.
Deputy police commissioner, Moshiur Rahman, said: “The leader of this ring is Liaqat Hossain and the women are skilled at making fake notes.”
Liaqat has been making counterfeit notes for ten years and they began work, keeping Eid ul Azha as their time of operation. Smugglers buy such notes near the border, said the police officer.
DMP additional police commissioner, Abdul Baten, says: “Many Indian citizens are also involved in this and they used the notes in remote places of India where detection is difficult and hoodwinking people is easy.”
Quoting the arrested, DB officials said that a bundle of Tk 100,000 Rupee is sold for Tk 10-12 thousand.
The Indian law enforcers have also been informed of the arrest and the operation.
Reportedly, to avoid arrest, the makers of false notes used to change house every 2-3 months, informed the police.
DMP’s ‘citizen information gathering’ operation ended recently, which forced the false note makers to change their homes.
