The Dhaka city corporations want to use experience of the Kolkata city corporation to successfully deal with the scourge of Aedes mosquitoes.
Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) and Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) want to use repellent and equipment used by Kolkata City.
Already, DNCC mayor, Md Atiqul Islam, has called Indian High commissioner to Dhaka, Riva Ganguly Das. He has asked for equipment from Kolkata City Corporation.
Dengue has spread across the city and the hospitals are currently overwhelmed and the city corporations are failing to deal with the situation. That’s why they are trying to use the experience of the neighbouring country.
On Jul 31 evening, DNCC Mayor Atiqul Islam said: “We have come to know that Kolkata city corporation has become successful in controlling Dengue; I phoned the Indian high commissioner to know in detail what sort of training the workers took and she has assured us of assistance.”
We need to know what sort of machines they used, added the mayor.
On the other hand, DSCC mayor Sayeed Khokon has said: “We have already asked help from USA and World Health Organisation (WHO); and if necessary, help will also be taken from Kolkata.”
BBC Bangla report has said: “There was a time when the onset of monsoon used to trigger anti Dengue drives; but for the last few years, the Kolkata City Corporation has been carrying out anti-dengue drives, with constant year round monitoring of nursing homes, hospitals and patients.”
All of Kolkata’s 144 wards have 20-25 workers who work solely to control dengue mosquito. One group carries out campaigns while the other keeps an eye on stagnant water. In addition, there are rapid action teams with equipment and vehicles.
When they get news, they go to the spots and destroy larvae.
