Riya BegumTaslima Begum Renu was lynched by a mob at Dhaka’s Badda on suspicion of being a child lifter when she went to North Badda Government Primary School to make admission enquiries about her child.

The guardians on the premises of the schools started questioning her and at one point started accosting her as a child abductor on the morning of Tuesday (Jul 20).

The key suspect in the case Mohammad Ibrahim alias Hridoy Hossain Mollah confessed in court that a guardian named Ria Begum Moina is the one who first started addressing Renu as a child lifter.

As word spread, people crowded the scene. Renu was taken to the principal’s office but around 10-15 people broke into the school, dragged her out and lynched her.

Ria Begum, as well as Hridoy, confessed to their part in front of the court on Friday (Jul 26).

“Two suspects have confessed. They have been sent to jail,” said Badda police Inspector Abdur Razzak.

Police arrested Riya Begum from North Badda’s Misritola on Thursday (Jul 26) after analysing video footage of the mob lynching while Hridoy was nabbed from Narayanganj on Tuesday (Jul 23).

Hridoy, a grocer, was seen beating Renu brutally in the video which surfaced on social media platforms right after the incident.

Ria was brought face to face with Hridoy during the remand when he identified her as the one who called Ria a child lifter.

Badda police OC Rafiqul Islam told Bangla Tribune that Ria’s child is a first-grader at the school.

“She has confessed and we are monitoring a few others. They will be arrested based on solid evidence,” he said.

Renu, a single mother of two, was brutally beaten to death by a mob on suspicion of being a child abductor, in front of North Badda Government Primary School on the morning of Jul 20.

Later, the victim’s nephew Nasir Uddin started a case over the death accusing 400 to 500 unidentified people.

As of now, police have arrested 14 people including Riya Begum for their alleged connection with this case.
