On Jun 18, 2016, a large number of weapons were found abandoned in a canal in Diabari in capital`s Uttara. FILE PHOTOThe mystery surrounding the huge cache of weapons recovered from a canal in Diabari in Uttara lingers. The investigating officers have not been able to ascertain who imported the weapons and for what purpose.
AIG of police HQ, Sohel Rana, says: “DMP’s Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime Unit (CTTC) is investigating the incident.”
Current investigating officer, ADC Jahangir, observes: “We do not know who left the weapons in the canal; we are trying to find out the people behind this.”
On Jun 18, 2016, a large number of weapons were found abandoned in a canal in Diabari. They contained: 95 7.65mm pistols, 2 0.9mm pistols, 462 magazines of SMG, 1060 rounds of bullets, 10 bayonets, 180 cleaning rods and 104 boxed with springs.
On Jun 19, 32 SMG magazines, 8 cleaning rods were found and on Jun 25, the discovery included five walkie-talkies, two transmitters, two feeder cables and 22 boxes containing IC, transistors, capacitors and circuits.
One week after the recovery of the weapons, militants carried out a raid at the Holey Artisan though investigating officials say that the recovered weapons are not similar to the ones used by militants at Holey Artisan.
Most of the weapons found with militants so far are of low quality and made in local lathe machines.
ADC of CTTC, Jahangir Alam, observes: “On a few occasions, we found AK-22 rifle used by militants at Holey Artisan, one was found in Kamlapur rail station and the other in Chattogram.”
After the recovery at Diabari, police commissioner, Asaduzzaman Mia, said: “This is not the work of an ordinary criminal; those who want to disrupt the country’s social harmony are behind this.”
At that time, three cases were lodged at Turag thana over the three separate hauls and the investigations are currently ongoing.
