The Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) has arrested a man, accused of killing his wife in Dhaka for failing to meet his dowry demands from Chattogram.
Police said the man called his mother-in-law on her phone after the murder and told to "come and take her body."
Twenty-eight-year-old Amir Hossain, a CNG auto-rickshaw driver, stabbed Sharmin Begum, 20, and later cut her veins with a sharp weapon in the capital’s Mohammadpur area on Jul 2, Deputy Inspector General (DIG) and chief of Police Investigation Bureau (PBI) Banaj Kumar Majumder told a media briefing at PBI’s headquarters on Tuesday (Jul 9).
He was arrested from the port city's EPZ area around 5:30pm on Monday .
Banaj Kumar said, “Amir demanded Tk 10,000 from his in-laws on Jun 30. The next day he asked for Tk 50,000 but received Tk 1,000 from his father-in-law which made him really angry.
On Jul 2, Amir went home after work, stabbed Shamima to death and then cut the veins on her hands and legs.”
Later, Amir called his mother-in-law over the phone and said, “Your daughter’s dead body has been kept under the bed. Come and take it away."
Amir’s neighbours heard Sharmin’s groans and took her to the National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedic Rehabilitation (NITOR) where she died, the PIB chief further added.
Police recovered the murder weapon from the spot. A case is underway, he said.
Sharmin and Amir had a love marriage. However, Amir had two failed marriages before marrying Sharmin, he added.
