Barrister Kaiser Kamal served the notice to the home secretary, Dhaka deputy commissioner, the police chief, the inspector general of prison and superintendant of Keraniganj Central Jail on Tuesday (Jul 9).
It warned of legal steps if she isn’t allowed to sign the documents within 48 hours
“Khaleda Zia has been in prison for a long time now and she is continuously being deprived of her legal rights,” said Barrister Kamal.
He added that she is not being permitted to sign the power of attorney without which a prisoner cannot be represented in court and “allowing her to sign the documents is her legal and constitutional right.”
A three-time prime minister, Khaleda is serving a 17-year jail term for her involvement in the Zia Orphanage Trust and Zia Charitable Trust graft cases.
She is currently undergoing treatment at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University Hospital.
