An aircraft mechanic for the Biman Bangladesh Airlines has confessed to his involvement in the smuggling of gold bars into the country using the national flag carrier.
Aircraft Mechanic Mohammad Afzal Hossain Howlader was arrested on Jul 2, when customs at the Dhaka airport recovered gold bars weighing nearly 13 kg from a Biman plane.
Following a four-day remand, he was produced before the court of a Dhaka metropolitan magistrate where his confessional statement was recorded on Monday (Jul 8).
Customs at the Dhaka airport raided the Boeing 777-300ER, which was used to operate a flight from Mascot, on a tip-off.
A total of 110 gold bars were weighing 12.76 kg were found inside one of the toilets of the aircraft.
