In 2017, a landslide triggered by heavy rains killed nearly 170 people and devastated hundreds of homes in the northeastern region of Chattogram. File photoHeavy rains in the next 24 hours from Saturday (Jul 6) morning may trigger landslides in the northeastern region of Chattogram, says the Met office.
In a ‘Heavy Rainfall Warning’ issued on Saturday, it said heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely to occur at several places over Barishal and Chattogram divisions “due to the active monsoon over Bangladesh”.
Rainfalls between 44 and 88 millimetres are defined as heavy while more than 89mm is categorised as very heavy. One mm of rainfall is the equivalent of one litre of water per square meter.

Landslides may occur at places over the hilly regions of Chattogram division, according to the Met office warning.
A landslide in 2017 in the northeastern division left nearly 170 killed while in 2007 at least 127 people died in another landslide triggered by monsoon rains.
Meanwhile, in its weather forecast for the next 24 hours, the Bangladesh Meteorological Department said light to moderate rain or thunder showers accompanied by temporary gusty wind is likely to occur at most places over Dhaka, Khulna, Sylhet divisions and at many places over Rangpur, Rajshahi and Mymensingh divisions with moderately heavy to heavy falls at places over southern part of the country.

Signal No 3 advised for ports

The maritime ports of Chattogram, Cox's Bazar, Mongla and Payra have been advised to keep hoisted local cautionary signal No 3 as squally weather is likely to affect those.

Steep pressure gradient lies over the North Bay and under its influence, squally weather is likely to affect the maritime ports, North Bay and adjoining coastal areas of Bangladesh, according to the Met office.

All the fishing boats and trawlers over the North Bay have been advised to remain close to the coast and proceed with caution until further notice.
