Different political and workers organisations has staged demonstration protesting the revised gas price, which comes into effect on Jul 1.
Political parties -- Bangladesh Congress, Khalefate Majlish's Dhaka city unit, and Islami Oikya Andolon's city unit, and workers organisations -- Garment Workers Front separately formed human chain and organised protest in front of Dhaka's National Press Club on Friday (Jul 5).Speakers at the programmes called the government to revoke the revised gas price and increase accountability of the state-owned gas distributing company's activities.
Leaders of the garment body said the gas price hike would affect the apparel workers' living standard.Extending supports to the left party's shutdown for Sunday over gas price hike, speakers alleged that the government safeguards the interest of LGN traders by raising the price.
On Jun 30, Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission announced a gas price hike for all users on an average by 32.8 percent including household users.The monthly gas bill for single-burner stoves has been hiked to Tk 925 from Tk 750 and double-burners at Tk 975 from Tk 800.
For customers paying for gas by the cubic metre, the price will jump to Tk 12.60 per cubic metre from Tk 9.10 per cubic metre.
