Customs at the Dhaka airport have recovered over 100 gold bars concealed inside a Biman Bangladesh Airlines plane after it operated a Muscot-Dhaka via Chattogram flight.
A Biman mechanic has been detained over the haul on Tuesday (Jul 2), said Deputy Commissioner Othelo Chowdhury of the customs.
The raid on the Boeing 777-300ER plane was carried out on a tip-off, he said.
“Six bundles wrapped in black duct tapes were found inside one of the toilets of the plane. A total of 110 gold bars were weighing 12.76 kg have been seized,” said Chowdhury.
The estimated market value of the haul stands at nearly Tk 64 million, according to the customs official.
Biman’s Aircraft Mechanic Afzal Hossain has been detained as well as the aircraft has been seized, said Chowdhury.
A spokesperson from the Biman said that Hossain has been suspended.
“Departmental actions will be taken against those involved following an inquiry,” Deputy General Manager (PR) Tahera Khandaker told Bangla Tribune.
