The High Court has ordered police to arrest suspended deputy inspector general Mizanur Rahman and send him to jail.
The court’s order came on Monday (Jul 1), when it turned down the senior police officer’s petition for anticipatory bail in a case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission on charges of amassing illegal wealth.
During the hearing, the bench of Justice Obaidul Hassan and Justice SM Kuddus Zaman observed that Mizan’s activities have tainted the police’s image.
On Sunday (Jun 30), the suspended police officer filed the petition seeking anticipatory bail on charges pressed by the graft watchdog.
On Jun 24, the ACC filed the case against Mizan on charges of amassing over Tk 30 million beyond his known source of income.
Mizan has recently alleged that ACC’s enquiry officer Khandaker Enamul Basir, who was suspended later, took Tk 4 million bribe with a false promise of exonerating him of all charges.
The police official came under the scanner in January last year when he was accused of forcibly marrying and torturing a woman. He was soon withdrawn from his post as the additional commissioner of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police.
