The video of a fatal attack on a man in Barguna infront of his protesting wife has triggered a storm of protest on Facebook. Rifat Sharif was attacked by sharp weapons wielding miscreants on Jun 26 morning. Later, he died of his injuries.
Journalist and columnist, Probhash Amin, has said on Facebook: “when a person was being hacked, no one protested, how long will this go on?”
We need swift punishment for such crimes and, therefore, a law has to be passed immediately.
A former student of the University of Dhaka wrote: “why didn’t the people come to save Rifat? Where did they get the audacity to commit such a crime in broad daylight?”
An expat from Canada writes: when people are killed in broad daylight, law and the legal process are engulfed in darkness.
Social activist Britwa Roy Dipa has said: “killing in front of other people! In which society are we living? Bangladesh is passing through her darkest period.”
Meanwhile, activist, Leena Pervin writes: there is a lack of genuine desire to punish the perpetrator. When people begin to feel they are above the law, killers like Nayan are born.
