Jharna Dhara Chowdhury, a life-long social activist and ardent proponent of the values espoused by Mahatma Gandhi, has died at the age of 80.Famous Gandhian activist, Padma Sree recipient Jharna Dhara Chowdhury died at the age of 80.

The noted humanitarian activist passed away at a hospital in the capital of old age complications, according to Naba Kumar Raha, director of the Gandhi Ashram Trust.

She dedicated her whole life to the Gandhian way of peacebuilding and development and acted as General Secretary of Gandhi Ashram Trust at Joyag, Noakhali.

She has conferred the Ekushey Award in 2015 for her contribution to society.

Born on October 15, 1938, at Lakshmipur, Jharna has devoted her whole life to promoting peace, communal harmony and social justice, inspired by Mahatma Gandhi's non-violent creed.

Jharna was the daughter of noted Noakhali Gandhian Promoth and Ashalata Chowdhury.
