Though it emerged two and a half years ago that DIG Mizan used his influence to accumulate wealth, no step was taken against him.
The written and verbal complaint against him was lodged in Jan 2017; in such a scenario, Mizan has come to the discussion once more when he was accused of trying to bribe Anti-Corruption Commission, ACC director, Khandaker Enamul Basir.
Police headquarter sources say that DIG Mizan is accused of getting involved in a variety of underhand deals related to lobbying, appointment and transfers.
He is also accused of sexually harassing, abducting and threatening to kill a female media worker.
Though a report was submitted at the police HQ on Feb 28, 2018, recommending punishment for Mizan, no step was taken against the officer by the home ministry.
Another probe committee was formed on Jun 16, to investigate bribery accusations. It’s found that this committee will recommend termination of DIG Mizan.
In January 2017, a verbal complaint was made at the police HQ against Mizan for harassing a TV news reader.
In July, Mizan is said to have abducted Mariam Akhter Echo from Panthapath, whom he forcibly married on Jul 17.
On condition that the marriage would be kept secret until 2019, the wedding was formalised with Tk 5 million fixed as denmohor.
Later, when Mariam wanted recognition as a wife, two cases were lodged against her. Mariam was arrested on Dec 12; since bail appeal was rejected, she had to go to prison. Mariam got a release on bail on Jan 1, 2018.
On Jan 8, a three-member investigation committee was formed to probe into the accusations against Mizan.
On 9 January, he was withdrawn from DMP and attached to police HQ.
When news about Mizan was published, he allegedly phoned the journalist and gave death threats.
Meanwhile, the Anti-Corruption Commission, ACC, sent letters to six organisations, asking for Mizan’s wealth information.
The organisations are Bangladesh Bank, Dhaka and Barishal register office, BRTA, RAJUK and REHAB.
The investigation committee formed earlier suggested punitive measures against Mizan. On 25 April, ACC quizzed Mizan for 7 and a half hour.
On this day, Mizan apologised for misbehaving with a media person.
On 23 May 2019, ACC director Khondokar Enamul Basir, submitted a report on illegal wealth accumulated by Mizan, suggesting legal action against Mizan.
As per the report, Mizan has assets worth Tk. 4 crore 2 lakh 87 thousand.
There are accusations of corruption, abuse of power and bribery against many police officials; on several occasions, probe bodies were formed and recommendations were implemented by the home ministry. But rumours have started to circulate since no step has been taken against DIG Mizan as yet.
