File photo shows former OC of Sonagazi police Moazzem HossainTransparency International Bangladesh has sought a judicial probe against suspended Sonagazi OC Moazzem Hossain’s involvement in the murder of Feni madrasa student Nusrat Jahan Rafi.
The organisation also questioned Moazzem’s name being left out of the charge sheet that was recently lodged in court.
“Although PBI [Police Bureau of Investigation] completed the probe and lodged the report with utmost promptness, we don’t have faith on the objectivity of it,” PBI Executive Director Dr Iftekharuzzaman said in a media statement on Friday (May 31).
Saying that suing Moazzem under the Digital Security Act wasn’t enough, he stated, “The OC didn’t follow any laws while questioning Nusrat.
“The video that went viral on social media didn’t show any female police during questioning. She was being harassed with embarrassing questions.”
The statement said that the police administration failed to provide Nusrat with security even after she filed the sexual harassment against an influential local.
“The police official [Moazzem] tried to pass off the incident as suicide despite the fact that she was tied and set on fire on the madrasa roof,” the statement read.
It also said that taking everything into consideration it cannot be ruled out that Moazzem tried to protect the perpetrators.
“Abuse on women and children has reached an alarming state. There is no other way to come out of it other than implementing strict laws,” Iftekharuzzaman said and added that there is no other alternative to a judicial probe against Moazzem.
