Three dead as nor'wester rips through Dhaka

FOCUS BANGLAAt least three people have been killed and dozen others injured as nor’wester lashed through Dhaka.
The incidents were reported from the city’s Paltan and Badda area on Monday (May 17) evening.
Two people were killed and several others injured after a wall collapsed during the storm in Badda, Elen Chowdhury, assistant commissioner (Badda Zone) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, told Bangla Tribune.
The deceased have been identified as Bulbul, 30, and Tapan, 28.
In Patan, a man died and dozen others injured when the nor’wester crashed a temporary pandal on the devotees at Baitul Mukarram National Mosque around 7:15pm.
The deceased has been identified as Shafiqul, 38, a worker of a tyre factory at the city’s Postagola, police said.
He hails from Aditmari of northern district of Lalmonirhat.
The injured are Sub-Inspector Shariful, 36, Bihlab, 34, Monir, 35, Tarek, 35, Jaane Alam, 25, Shakil, 23, Masud, 32, Sajib, 28, Awal, 30, Alal, 35, Ariful, 25, Aman Ullah, 25, and Rafiuzzaman, 27.
Muhammad Mohiuddin Majumdar, director (mosque and marketing) of Islamic Foundation told Bangla Tribune, “A temporary pandal was set up on the South Gate of the Mosque as large number of devotees gathering to offer prayer on Friday.
FOCUS BANGLA“Strom crashed the pandal during the evening prayer,” said Majumdar adding nearly 150 devotees were under the marquee at that time.
On information two units of the fire service rushed to the spot and began rescue works, said Md Russell Sikder, duty officer of Fire Service & Civil Defence Headquarters’ Control Room.
Paltan police OC Mahmudul Hasan told Bangla Tribune that police have also joined the rescue works.
Nearly 14 to 15 injured have been sent to hospital with two or three in critical condition, according to Islamic Foundation official Majumdar.
The injured underwent treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
“One of the devotees, Shafiqul, 38, succumbed to his injuries,” DMCH police outpost In-Charge Bacchu Mia told Bangla Tribune.
