Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Md. Asaduzzaman Mia has said that the rift between the West and Middle-east has given rise to militancy.
He made the comment on Monday (May 6), at a workshop titled “Reporting on terrorism”. The workshop was organized jointly by Crime Reporters’ Association (CRAB) and DMP’s Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime Unit.
Asking the TV channels to be more responsible in live telecast, the DMP commissioner, said, “On the issue of militancy, self-censorship is needed, in Sri Lanka, no channel showed the grisly details of the attack and refrained from showing mutilated dead bodies; they put national interest above all and that’s the lesson to learn.”
“We have managed to create an awareness against militancy which many western countries failed to achieve; to unite the people against extremism, the media played a constructive role,” said Mia.
The main aim of the militants is to create an atmosphere of terror and impose their ideology on other people and they always look for ways to have their views publicized, said the DMP commissioner adding: “Reporters should be careful to ensure that they do not promote the views of extremists.”
In Bangladesh, radicals are always trying to create an unstable situation but law enforcers are successfully tackling it with support from the media, he added.
