Baitul Mukarram National Mosque. BANGLA TRIBUNE/Sazzad HossainThe Baitul Mukarram National Mosque and Islamic Foundation in the capital has received a bomb threat from a self-proclaimed militant.
Islamic Foundation director general received the threat through a letter from one Mowlana Kamruzzaman who claims to be working with banned militant outfit Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB).
The letter sent on Apr 18 demanded that all “immoral activities” in the hotels near Baitul Mukarram be stopped.
Islamic Foundation received the letter on Apr 23 and immediately notified the home ministry, religious affairs ministry, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) commissioner, and the deputy commissioner of the related police zone to take necessary action.
The letter claimed that every day around 50 young women are “made to take part in immoral activities” in Hotel Shornali, within half kilometer radius of the national mosque.
The letter also said that the local police is also involved with it and the profit from these activities are distributed within these dishonest police employees as well.
“We won’t stand such blatant debauchery. If these immoral activities are not stopped Baitul Mukarram mosque and Islamic Foundation will be blown off with time bombs,” it read.
It said that the carnage will be publicized in world media to let them know what sort of “vile activity the Bangladesh government and police are involved in.”
“We have sent the letter to the home ministry for necessary action,” said Kazi Hassan Ahmed, acting secretary of the religious affairs ministry told Bangla Tribune.
DMP Motijheel Zone Deputy Commissioner Anwar Hossain admitted to receiving the letter and added that they are on the alert.
“We have beefed up security wherever necessary. The matter is under investigation but we are yet to find anything,” he said.
He added that they couldn’t trace the sender through the address on the letter and details will be provided at the end of the investigation.
