The murder investigation of journalist couple Sagar-Runi, college student Tanu, Mahmuda Mitu, wife of SP Babul Akhter, and teenager Tanvir Muhammad Taki have been running for ages.
In addition to these, there are other murder cases including that of LGBT activist Xulhas, blogger Niloy, self-proclaimed holy man Lutfur Rahamn and others in which the investigating officers are failing to reach a conclusion.
In several cases, criminals have not been identified as yet and therefore, charge sheets cannot be submitted. On 17 April last, supreme-court lawyer, Dr. Younus Ali Akhand has lodged a writ at the high court asking for a directive to know the progress of these cases.
Journalist couple Sagar Runi were killed in their West Rajarbazaar flat in 2011 and two months later, Detective Branch took over the case.
In the last seven years, the investigation officer of this case has been changed several times; currently, it’s under ASP Md. Sahidar Rahman. He says: “We are carrying out the investigation to the best of our abilities but there are some areas where work is unfinished.”
In 2016, a girl named Tanu was killed inside the premises of the Cumilla Cantonment and the case went to Cumilla section of CID.
Inspector Jalal Ahmed of Cumilla CID, says: “The work to match the recovered DNA is still going one and unless we get a report on the DNA, a decision cannot be reached.”
Mitu, the wife of SP Babul Akhter, was killed by miscreants in Chattogram in 2016. The case has been under SP Md. Kamruzzamn for the last three years and he said: “We cannot specify an exact date, we have not been able to pinpoint a criminal plus several other issues are also being looked into.”
Khatib of high court shrine and a regular religious programme moderator, mowlana Farouki was killed in 2014 by extremists. The case is currently with ASP Mahmud Talukder, who said: “We have ascertained the connection of JMB with this killing and the case is at almost the end.”
Blogger Niladri Chatterjee was hacked to death in 2015 and DB officials say: “A team of outlawed radical group Ansarullah Bangla team is associated with this and the investigation is being carried out by Counter Terrorism and Trans-National Crime Unit, CTTC.
