River vessel workers have announced to go on a nationwide strike from Monday (Apr 15) midnight to press home their 11-point demand including Tk 1 million compensation to worker who dies on duty.
The announcement came at a rally of waterway workers under the banner of Bangladesh Water Transport Workers’ Federation in Dhaka on Saturday (Apr 13).
The workers were forced to announce the strike as no parties including the government and the vessel owners paid heed to out 11-point demands since we pressed it in September 2018, said Shah Alam, president of the federation.
Alam said that the strike would begin on 12:01am on Tuesday (Apr 16) if their demands are not met by Monday.
Their other demands are; stopping terrorism, extortion in waterways and torture to vessels workers, arrest of terrorists, ensuring workers’ social safety, issuing landing pass to India-bound workers, arranging free meal for on-duty workers at ships, re-fixing of in-charge, endorsement and technical allowances for masters and in-charges, and maritime and night allowance.
