Nor’wester death rises to eight

FOCUS BANGLAThe death toll following the season’s first Nor’wester rose to eight after a 40-year-old man who was injured during the Sunday’s storm, succumbed to injuries on Monday (Apr 1).

The deceased have been identified as Alamgir Hossain, who sustained injuries on Sunday evening when a light post fell on him, UNB quoted South Keraniganj model police OC Shah Zaman as saying.

Hossain, a resident of Shubaddya Uttarpara, was taken to Sir Salimullah Medical College Mitford Hospital, where he died around 2pm, added Zaman.

Four of the Sunday storm victims died when their vessels capsized on the Buriganga River in separate incidents, the report reads.

Two among them died when their trawler sank near Keraniganj, while a mother and her son died after their boat capsized near Borishur ghat in Keraniganj.

The victims have been identified as Sabbir Hossain, 18, Tuhin, 20, Rumi Akhter, 30, and her three-year old son Ali Hossain.

Bodies of the two youth were recovered around 8:30, one and a half an hour after their vessel capsized, while the other two bodies were retrieved 30 minutes after capsize, said police.

Three other deaths were reported in Dhaka after the Nor’wester lashed onto the capital on Sunday evening taking people by surprise.

The victims were identified as Md Hanif, 50, a tea vendor at Paltan, Mily D’Costa, 62, a resident of Monipuripara, and Md Dulal Mia, 40, a driver by profession.

Mili died after a tree fell on her on Lake Road around 6:30pm, police said.

Hanif was pronounced dead at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital around 6:50pm after he was injured from bricks which fell on him from a multi-storey building during the storm.

Dulal died on the spot around 6:45pm after a portion of an extended structure of a multi-storied building collapsed on him in West Shewrapara.

The tropical storm, the first of the season, ripped through the capital around 6:15pm with a wind speed of 74kmph, according to the Met Office.

Seventeen millimetres of rain was also recorded during the storm.
