Urban development authority RAJUK has been directed to meticulously scrutinise all the faulty and illegal buildings in Dhaka North, said its Mayor Atiqul Islam.
His remarks came on Friday (Mar 29) while speaking to the media after visiting Banani’s FR Tower.
“I have instructed RAJUK take measures against the faulty and illegal buildings,” he said.
Saying that the floors above the 18th were constructed without any permit, the mayor said, “Fire Service has handed the building to the police. Now police will monitor it and be responsible for its safety.”
He added that the building was still risky and it will be opened for use after specialists from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) run some tests and declare it safe.
The building has been surrounded by nets so that the glasses don’t fall and hurt pedestrians, Atiqul said.
On Thursday (Mar 28) a deadly fire broke out on the ninth floor of the multi-storied FR Tower at Banani.
Over 20 firefighting worked for over six hours to douse the fire that has claimed 19 lives and injured scores.
