They announced the call off at around 5:30pm five hours after staging a “sit-in” programme in front of the DU vice-chancellor's office.Students, who are demanding a re-run of the Dhaka University Central Students' Union (DUCSU) polls, have postponed their protests.
They announced the call off at around 5:30pm five hours after staging a “sit-in” programme in front of the DU vice-chancellor's office.
“We will announce our next course of action after discussing among ourselves,” said Rashed Khan, who was the general secretary candidate of Sadharon Chhatra Odhikar Songrokkhon Parishad panel, before calling off the protest.
“Today’s protest has been called off as the authorities did not reach us,” he said.
Prior to the sit-in, several hundred students—including activists and supporters of different panels who boycotted the DUCSU polls— brought out a procession.
It left from the base of Raju Sculpture around 12:30pm and its members chanted slogans for fresh DUCSU polls as it paraded the campus.
Later, they arrived in front of the vice-chancellor's office and began a "sit-in" progamme.
The Mar 11 DUCSU polls, held for the first time in 28 years, were marred by allegations of irregularities.
All panels, except that of Awami League's student affiliate Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), boycotted the elections, on allegation of rigging and irregularities.
BCL’s panel dominated the polls but their vice presidential candidate was defeated by quota reform leader Nurul Haq Nur.
