Jahalam spent the last three years behind bars instead of the real accused Abu Salek on charges of loan fraud and embezzlement of Tk 185 million from Sonali Bank Limited. The High Court has ordered the Anti Corruption Commission to submit all the records of the 26 case filed against Jahalam, who served three years in prison on charges of loan fraud and embezzlement of Tk 185 million from Sonali Bank Limited despite being innocent.
The bench of Justice FRM Nazmul Ahasan and Justice KM Kamrul Kader gave the order on Wednesday (Mar 6).
On Jan 28 the court summoned the respective representatives of ACC, home secretary and law secretary to provide an explanation on the matter.
The rule was issued after a national daily pointed out that Jahlam was in jail instead of the real accused, one Abu Salek.
Jahalam was arrested in 2016 after he was mistaken for Salek who was accused in 33 cases filed by the ACC over loan fraud and embezzling nearly Tk185 million from Sonali Bank.
The ACC summoned jute mill worker Jahalam over the matter five years ago through a letter sent to his Tangail residence. He was then produced in court where he pleaded innocent saying that he was not Salek.
He was released on Feb 4 day after it was brought to the HC’s attention that he was serving time instead of Salek.
